Participants
Last month I took "Urban Planning & Heritage Control Short Course" , held by Deakin University for 2 days. It was on 16th & 17th August. I was the one & the only Asian participant while others came from US, Germany, Italy & Australia. It was a nice course (lumayan lah….setelah lama gak ada kegiatan, setidaknya bisa buat "bekel" back to my campus :p ). Two weeks before the course, the course coordinator sent me the reading materials. It was quite thick, but I thought it was essential for my additional teaching materials. There were heritage history in the Australian planning scheme; heritage law & Australian Planning Act; and some best practices heritage preservation in the US, European & Asian countries.

First Day, 16 Aug
In the first day, we learned about the economic value of heritage. What the advantages of heritage for urban planning. The instructor also shown us nice pictures about heritage building preservation in Melbourne. In the afternoon session, it was quite hard & difficult material about Australian Planning Law.

Second Day, 17 Aug
The first session in the second day was started by Australian HeritageGlass_house Listing. After lunch break, we went to the City for our heritage field trip.
First, we saw a nice house that was renovated by the owner using painted glass
material. The owner still preserved his old house model. It seemed that the house was still the same with other old houses around it though it was only on the painted glass material.

Then
, we went to South Melbourne Town Hall. The heritage area was almost similar with Indonesian Alun-alun style. In front of the town hall, it was open space and it was surrounded by the old post office, the  old police office & law court. The old buildings were preserved physically and were given the new functions.

Finally, we went to 60L Green Building on Leicester St. It was one of the 60l_green_building_2
sustainable buildings in Melbourne. The facade actually represented the old building. However, when we came into the building, it was the modern style one. It used the glass material for the wall for each rooms, smoking & mobile phone were prohibited in the building area, there was roof garden, there was natural environment in the area, there was solar energy measurement to control energy efficiency use in the building, they also had recycled the rainwater in the storage tank.
